How a kid from Milwaukee became a Global Investment Expert
Milwaukee is a long way from just about anywhere. So when Carl was invited to study in Tokyo for a year during college he jumped at the chance. This led to a Masters Degree from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy where he focused on international business and East Asian history. He also attended Harvard University's Center for East Asian Studies.
Next, it was a Japanese Government fellowship at Keio University's School of Commerce, heading First Boston's Korean and Japan groups, and opening markets in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Sydney for the investment boutique Robert Baird & Company.
Bit by the political bug, Carl went to Washington where he was a consultant to the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Treasury on Asian affairs before being appointed by President George H.W. Bush to represent America on the Executive Board of the Asian Development Bank in Manila. There he headed up investment missions to countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Mongolia, Australia, Singapore, Vietnam and China.
Following the Bush Administration, Carl became involved in all sorts of entrepreneurial adventures such as power projects in Pakistan and China and internet financial services. He then launched Chartwell Partners, a global financial publishing and advisory firm in late 2002.
After seeing some of his articles, Forbes asked Carl to write the "Global Gambits" column for its Asian edition, Forbes Asia.

Carl has primarily used exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to build global portfolios but also has an eye for picking stocks. Here are the excellent results for his Global Opportunity portfolio:
In 2008, Carl began managing some private accounts based on his Asia & Emerging Markets platform and his simple trading signals and strategy. That summer his clients made a bundle while U.S. and foreign markets were tumbling.
Carl is also the founder of the Center for Economic Diplomacy with the mission of supporting policies that help American companies grow with emerging markets. |
